Your home network is the gateway through which all of your devices connect to the internet — and to each other. An unsecured network is vulnerable to unauthorized access, data theft, device hijacking, and being used for malicious activities without your knowledge. Securing your home network does not require technical expertise; it requires following a set of proven practices that take most users less than an hour to implement. 1. Change Your Router’s Default Login Credentials

Every router ships with a default username and password — often “admin” and “password” or similar — that are publicly known and easily found online. Attackers routinely scan for routers using default credentials. Log into your router’s admin panel (usually at 192.168.1.1 or found on the router label) and change both the username and password to something unique and strong (at least 12 characters with mixed letters, numbers, and symbols).

2. Use WPA3 or WPA2-AES Encryption

Your Wi-Fi network’s encryption protocol determines how hard it is for attackers to intercept and decrypt your wireless traffic. WPA3 is the latest and most secure standard, available on modern Wi-Fi 6 and newer routers. If your router does not support WPA3, use WPA2 with AES encryption. Never use WEP or WPA-TKIP, which are outdated and easily cracked.

Disable WPS in your router settings unless you specifically need it for a device that does not support other connection methods.

7. Enable Your Router’s Firewall

Most routers include a built-in firewall (SPI firewall) that blocks unsolicited incoming connections. Verify it is enabled in your router’s security settings. For advanced users, consider also enabling DoS (Denial of Service) attack protection if your router supports it.

8. Monitor Connected Devices
